About City of Glasgow College

In 2011 City of Glasgow College became Scotland’s landmark pathfinder multi-college merger. Combining the richness and historic legacy of four specialist colleges across nautical, commerce, building and printing, and catering curriculum areas, it is widely regarded as having pioneered the blueprint for successful multiple college mergers.

Our proud heritage can be traced as far back as 1927 with the establishment of Glasgow’s first College of Building. And an associated college legacy dates back even further to 1853 when independent boys’ school Allan Glen’s was built on Cathedral Street where the new Super College now sits.

In 2019 our college celebrates 50 years of delivering world class nautical training which, since August 2015, has been delivered at Riverside campus on the site of the Glasgow College of Nautical Studies which opened in October 1969. Our new multi-award-winning building is the most modern, most technologically advanced maritime campus in Europe and overlooks one of the world’s great global waterways, the River Clyde.

Riverside is home to the Faculty of Nautical & STEM. Almost 3,000 marine and engineering student cadets and officers, who come to City of Glasgow College from across the world to access our state-of-the-art facilities which provide real world skills and students with experiences as close to those as they will encounter in their chosen field.

Creating a Pipeline to Employment

Engaging and inspiring our students with a world class standard of learning is central to everything that we do as we provide the most vital link between post-secondary and tertiary education in order to achieve the expertise that industry needs. The college engages with employers to ensure that industry-relevant, future-proofed learning and cutting edge facilities are provided for our students and we work with industry experts who help shape our curricular activity. The college delivered the first Foundation Apprenticeship in engineering in Glasgow, it is recognised as one of the first STEM Assured regional colleges in the UK and it was selected as the country’s national centre for innovation by the Institute of Innovation and Knowledge Exchange (IKE).

Our students are encouraged to take part in competitions to help challenge and improve their skills. Our professional cookery students regularly win prestigious events such as the Atlantic Cup Challenge, Country Range Student Chef Challenge and Nestle Toque d’Or, cementing the renowned reputation our college has for excellence in culinary skills. Our students also gain real life experiences which range from assisting on Herald photo-shoots to serving high profile guests in our fine dining training restaurant, to refurbishing a Clyde steamer; and from computer networking placements to working at the world-famous Venice Biennale.
