About
East Renfrewshire Council is committed to improving the lives of local people, promoting equality and fairness and enhancing the area in which we live, now and for the future. Our corporate statement East Renfrewshire: Your Council, Your Future sets out what we are doing to influence positive changes for all residents and achieve our vision for the area.
East Renfrewshire is situated to the south of Glasgow and has a population of over 95,000 people. It covers an area of 67 sq miles (174 sq km); of which approximately 85% is rural land. We have an excellent reputation and are considered one of Scotland’s most desirable places to live. We have quality parks and green spaces, and with our commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle we have amongst the highest rates of recycling in Scotland.
We are proud to be one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse areas in Scotland, with significant Muslim and Jewish communities. Our residents are happy with their quality of life in East Renfrewshire. There are high levels of satisfaction with the area and the services the council provides, and while there are varying rates of satisfaction with individual services, generally this has increased in recent years.
East Renfrewshire Council is served by 18 elected Councillors who hold the organisation accountable and represent residents’ views across 5 multi-member wards: Barrhead, Liboside and Uplawmoor; Newton Means North and Neilston; Giffnock and Thornliebank; Clarkston, Netherlee and Williamwood; and Newton Mearns South and Eaglesham. The council’s individual departments work together and we employ around 3,600 members of staff who work 24 hours a day to deliver services that support local people throughout their lifetime.
