The Category Leadership team is the primary customer interface with HMRC business areas and the single point of contact on all commercial matters. Collaborative working across Commercial Directorate is essential and requires the Category Leadership team to share knowledge and best practice with the sourcing and contract management teams in order to ensure appropriate insight is embedded in all commercial activities.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an expanding team of experts in the Corporate Services Category, to support the design and implementation of effective category strategies and plans. You will work directly with leaders across HMRC business areas up to and including Director level, providing appropriate advice and challenge, to maintain a full understanding of their requirements and priorities to effectively support delivery of HMRC’s strategic objectives.

The Corporate Services Category covers all spend not directly related to IT and Property and Facilities Management. With total spend of c£300m pa, the goods and services support major strategic initiatives and significant areas of day-to-day expenditure. Therefore, category strategies involve supporting development and implementation of cross-government solutions, including liaison with the Crown Commercial Service, and creation of approaches specific to the unique requirements of HMRC. Therefore, we expect team members to possess strong category expertise in specific areas but also to be able to rapidly assimilate market knowledge and apply their general commercial acumen in order to support the full portfolio of requirements.

The Category Specialist is the lead interface with key stakeholder and supplier/market communities and mentors and develops the wider commercial team in the appropriate sub-categories of spend. Working closely with colleagues in sourcing and commercial contract management, they shape the sourcing strategies, ensure these are communicated effectively across HMRC and drive implementation. This will require both the ability to think, influence and act strategically and a practical and pragmatic approach to see things through.
