About Glasgow City Council
Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city, with just over 600,000 citizens. It is a city with a great history and heritage built around the River Clyde and on the strength of its people, their pride in the city, spirit and diversity. We are the centre of the only metropolitan area in Scotland and are the most ethnically diverse city in the country.
We are also the economic powerhouse of Scotland and the fastest growing major city economy in the UK, outside London. We are the academic heart of the country and home to over 130,000 further and higher education students from 135 countries. Almost 50% of the workforce in the city is educated to degree level, significantly above most cities in the UK. Educational attainment is improving year on year, employment is rising, the business base is increasing and the city is the current European Entrepreneurial Region of the year.
The Council’s Strategic Plan 2017 to 2022 was approved at Council on 2 November 2017. This sets out the Council’s vision to have a world class city with a thriving, inclusive economy where everyone can flourish and benefit from the city’s success. The Plan sets out 7 cross cutting themes:
- A Thriving Economy
- A Vibrant City
- A Healthier City
- Excellent and Inclusive Education
- A Sustainable and Low Carbon City
- Resilient and Empowered Neighbourhoods
- A Well Governed City that listens and responds
Each theme has a number of outcomes that we wish to achieve over the life of the Plan and in turn is supported by a number of detailed actions.
Neighbourhoods and Sustainability aims to deliver a cleaner, safer and better Glasgow.
Neighbourhoods and Sustainability’s suite of service provision expanded when Community Safety Glasgow transferred in February 2019.The service has adopted a new structure to deliver its core services. The main activities and areas for responsibility for Neighbourhoods and Sustainability include the following:
- Management, maintenance and development of the local road transport network.
- Waste management and recycling.
- Parks and open spaces.
- Street cleanliness.
- Managing the public space CCTV network for Glasgow.
- Managing and resolving antisocial behaviour in neighbourhoods.
- Supporting victims of gender based violence and commercial sexual exploitation.
As part of the new structure, the Neighbourhood and Place model was implemented. The model was implemented to improve service delivery across the 3 sectors of Glasgow; North West, North East and the South. The model aims to ensure that the diversity of people and place across the City are engaged with, listened to and get the services they need. Each area has a designated Neighbourhood Liaison Manager and Neighbourhood Liaison Coordinators. They are responsible for coordinating and improving service delivery in relation to various issues such as cleanliness, waste management and antisocial behaviour.
The main aims of Neighbourhoods and Sustainability are to:
- Support Glasgow in limiting the impact of climate change.
- Continue to develop the transport infrastructure, keeping Glasgow connected through walking, cycling and public transport.
- Improve and enhance the cleanliness of our city by working with residents, businesses and partners.
- Improve the safety and wellbeing of our city’s neighbourhoods by working alongside key partners.
