Reporting to the Group CEO, the Director of Heritage will contribute to the leadership and strategic planning across all sites and operations of the College and the Directorate. The College’s Heritage Directorate comprises of one of the world’s top museums, the prestigious Surgeons Hall Museum, Library and Archives.
With the current Director of Heritage retiring at the end of the year, the new post holder will have the opportunity to work collaboratively across the College and provide strategic leadership for the College’s Heritage Department in partnership with the Heritage Board. They will work in partnership with the Director of Membership and Communications to enhance the contribution of the museums and library as benefits to the college membership and with the Director of Resources, to ensure that the College’s resources are utilised to achieve the highest quality impact.
The key responsibilities of the post-holder will be to raise awareness of the College and to increase opportunities that will showcase the College’s collections. They will work in partnership with the Surgeons Quarter team to develop the College as a visitor attraction and further working relationships with other Edinburgh World Heritage Site organisations.
The new Director of Heritage will be responsible for the management of exhibitions , in-person and online and should consider the expansion of these into a national and international exhibition space. They will deliver on special projects, such as Digital Transformation an ensure there will be a robust Heritage Business Continuity Plan in place. As a vital member of the Senior Management Team, it will be the postholders responsibility to advise the Group Chief Executive, President and Office Bearers and to collaborate with key stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced successful leader, with relevant sector experience and will be familiar with specialist libraries, archives and museums. They should be experienced in planning, delivering and managing exhibitions and have a strong commercial acumen. They will have excellent people management skills and will be educated to degree level, ideally with a Postgraduate or Professional qualification.
