NATIONAL MINING MUSEUM SCOTLAND APPOINTS A CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Following a successful recruitment campaign with Aspen, The National Mining Museum Scotland (NMMS) has appointed Mhairi Cross as their new Chief Executive. Mhairi moves from her post at Renfrewshire Council to take up her new position this week and Aspen would like to wish both Mhairi and NMMS all the best.

National Mining Museum Scotland is a 5 Star visitor attraction and winner of the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions “Best Visitor Experience” Award in 2009 and 2013. The museum provides a great day out for all ages! They are based at one of the finest surviving examples of a Victorian colliery in Europe, the Lady Victoria Colliery at Newtongrange, just nine miles south of Edinburgh. Visitors to the museum will marvel at the sheer size of the place, be astounded by the engineering brilliance behind all the machinery and retrace the footsteps and struggles of the thousands of miners and their families before them.

NMMS were looking for someone who could provide visible and strong leadership in order to build organisational capability, ensure the successfully delivery of their strategic and operational plans and collaborate with a broad stakeholder group. The new Chief Executive would also need to be able to drive forward the development and implementation of investment, branding, funding, programme management and vitally ensure that the Museum remains both a successful visitor attraction and a reputable historic site. Both Aspen and NMMS are in no doubt that Mhairi Cross meets all these requirements and will be successful in leading the organisation forward – Mhairi will join a dedicated and passionate team at the Museum.  Mhairi said of the recruitment process:

“As a candidate for the CEO post with NMMST I found Aspen very helpful and very supportive. Having been through the recruitment process for a range of posts in the past my experience had been quite different to going through the process with a recruitment agency and I have to say so much better. Aspen were great, in particular Ken who made sure I knew what was happening at each stage and that I had all the information I needed, that in turn boosted my confidence and gave me the support and encouragement I needed. Their professional conduct is excellent and I would recommend them to any organisation that is recruiting in the future.”

The team at Aspen, led by Ken Dalgleish (Managing Director), conducted a rigorous recruitment campaign which produced a number of quality candidates. Ken commented that:

“This is truly a 5 star attraction and I looked for reasons to visit more than I needed to just to have the opportunity to explore! We all wish Mhairi well in this new appointment. She was a great candidate from day one.”

Aspen have very much enjoyed working with NMMS on this key appointment and would highly recommend a visit to their unique site – for more information on NMMS please visit their website at http://nationalminingmuseum.com
