Thank you for your interest in the post of Chief Executive at The Highland Council.

Join us, and you will join a dedicated team that provides a wide range of essential services to one of the largest council areas in Europe. The Highlands is also world-renowned for its outstanding environment, excellent schools and safe communities, which make it a great place to live, work and learn.

Our Headquarters are in Inverness – “the city of the Gaidhealtachd” – one of the fastest growing cities in Europe and signed up to a City-Region deal in March 2016. We also deliver services in many rural and remote communities in an area covering 10,000 square miles. To serve our wide and diverse area, we are also highly decentralised, with services being delivered and managed locally by our staff.

We see ourselves as one of the best managed councils in Scotland with a clear focus on improvement and on being responsive to the needs of our communities. You will be joining us at a time of significant change. We are following a ranging programme of redesign aimed at improving on the effectiveness and efficiency of service delivery where putting the customer first; using technology to be more efficient and working with partners across public sector boundaries are our priorities.

With spending on services totalling £587 million and a 5 year capital programme of £482 million and 10,000 staff, The Highland Council is one of the largest public service organisations in Scotland.

We want our Chief Executive to have strategic vision, excellent partnering skills and commitment to high quality public services. You will serve a Council made up of 74 elected members, so a real understanding of what it means to provide leadership in a democratic environment is needed. Above all, you will be committed to openness, fairness and accountability in all that you do.

If you want to help us make public services in the Highlands the very best they can be, I would very much welcome your application for this important post. You will find further information in the candidate pack.
