Students Association of the University of the West of Scotland (SAUWS)

About SAUWS

The Students Association of the University of the West of Scotland (SAUWS) is an unincorporated charity and democratic organisation which is Student led and represents around 13,500 matriculated students at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS).

SAUWS plays a central role to delivering a quality Student Experience providing a wide range of services and activities which include representation, welfare, volunteering, clubs and societies and commercial outlets. The Association was awarded best Scottish Student Association in 2013 by National Union of Students (NUS).

SAUWS works closely with UWS which is one of Scotland’s largest modern Universities; the University is a significant contributor to the economic, social and cultural development of the West of Scotland, and beyond, by providing relevant, high quality, inclusive higher education and innovative and useful research.

With four campuses across the west and south-west of Scotland: Ayr, Dumfries, Hamilton and Paisley, UWS has a distinctive and important regional role. However, UWS is also an international University with some 1,400 international students drawn from 1/3 of the globe and over 100 international partners, a fifth campus has just opened in London.

SAUWS is embarking on a new and exciting journey following a recent constitutional change which was designed to reinforce organisational governance. SAUWS is looking to appoint a talented and innovative Chief Executive to help re-shape the Association. The new CE will be the senior staff member for the organisation and will be responsible for staff recruitment, management and service delivery.

The change to the constitution also includes recruiting 4 external trustees. These Trustees will bring expertise and stability to the predominately student Board. Along with the 4 external Trustees, the membership of the new Trustee Board will be five full-time elected Sabbatical Officers and four student Trustees appointed in the academic year. The Sabbatical Officers also work to represent students’ interests internally in partnership with UWS and externally on national issues with the National Union of Students (NUS).
