About St Columba’s Hospice

St Columba’s Hospice Care is an independent Scottish Charity with a diverse and committed workforce (made up of approximately 225 staff and over 650 volunteers). We provide specialist care and support to people with life-limiting conditions and their families across Edinburgh and the Lothians. Last year, we made a difference to the lives of over 1100 people.

Our patients and their families rely on us to deliver outstanding care and support, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our aim through every interaction with an individual or a family, is to provide access to the resources and services they need, so that they can live as independently as possible for as long as they can. That’s why we put patients and their families at the heart of everything we do both in the Hospice and in the community.

We provide care in people’s homes, in the community and in our state-of-the art hospice facility. We’re also privileged to have a dedicated Education and Research centre which from which we undertake world-leading palliative care research and offer a wide range of educational courses and opportunities for those working and training in the palliative and end of life care environment. St Columba’s is formally recognised as a University Hospice with links to Queen Margaret University and Edinburgh University. Our education service is renowned as a centre of educational excellence and aims to ensure that health and social care professionals have access to specialist palliative care education.

As a hospice, we play a fundamental part in the care system of this country and most people know at least one friend or family member who has been supported by hospice care. The unfortunate truth is that none of us know if one day we will come to rely on hospice care, either for ourselves or a loved one. This has been a particularly challenging year and we’re now focusing on developing our community-based care offering in line with our three-year strategy, ‘Adapting to a Changing World’. By delivering safe and effective care as close to home as possible, we hope to allow people to remain in their homes and communities for as long as they can.

Everything we do is made possible by the generosity of our donors and fundraisers, and the selflessness of our team of volunteers. We have to raise approximately 75% of our funding each year and as such, we are reliant on the community around us. Any contribution of time or money, as a volunteer or donor, can make a meaningful difference. Our values, respect, trust, care and compassion and partnership are part of who we are, what we stand for and how we act. They are central to what makes up the Hospice culture across our services and provide a background on how we work together to take on the challenges ahead.
