The Chief Operating Officer (Depute) is a key member of the Executive Team at Edinburgh College, providing strategic leadership and executive oversight across all aspects of corporate and operational excellence. The post holder will lead the development and delivery of integrated strategies covering finance, human resources and workforce planning, digital innovation and IT, estates and infrastructure, governance, risk, compliance and business continuity. Through these functions, the role ensures the College’s long-term sustainability, resilience and capacity to deliver outstanding learning, teaching and student experience.

Reporting to the Principal & Chief Executive, the Chief Operating Officer (Depute) acts with full delegated authority as required, including authority over staffing, financial management, governance reporting and emergency decision-making. The role leads major transformation programmes encompassing digital development, estates modernisation, service improvement, financial sustainability and organisational development. Working closely with the Board of Management, its Committees and senior leaders, the post holder will provide robust governance, transparent reporting and strategic insight, while embedding a culture of collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement and innovation across the College.

 

You will be an accomplished senior leader with a proven track record of providing strategic direction across multi-disciplinary corporate functions within a complex organisation. You will bring substantial experience in financial and operational management, including oversight of significant budgets, resource planning, contract management and the successful delivery of large-scale transformation and change. You will possess a strong working knowledge of finance, HR and organisational development, estates and facilities management, digital innovation and IT, governance, audit, risk and compliance.

With highly developed communication and influencing skills, you will be confident engaging with Boards, senior stakeholders, staff and external partners, and capable of presenting clear, evidence-based advice and reports to support strategic decision-making. You will demonstrate inspirational leadership, sound judgement and the ability to navigate complexity and challenge with confidence. A relevant degree or professional qualification is essential, alongside a strong commitment to professional development, equality, inclusion and the values and mission of Edinburgh College.
