The Role
Chief Executive Officer
Hanover Scotland
£124,080 during probation, rising to £130,611
Plus £6,000 car allowance and excellent benefits
Hybrid working | Regular travel across Scotland
As people in Scotland live longer and expectations of later life evolve, the connection between housing, health, care and technology is becoming increasingly important.
Hanover Scotland exists for that moment. We are one of the country’s leading providers of housing and services for older people, managing more than 4,500 homes across mainland Scotland. Around 600 employees, working with a committed Board, support people (primarily) aged 55+ feel safe and secure at home and live fulfilling, independent lives.
Ours is a clear social purpose, lived through values of respect, accountability, collaboration and inclusion. We are a respected, values-led organisation with a national voice on housing, care and independent living for older people.
Following the planned retirement of our current Chief Executive, we are looking for an exceptional leader to build on strong foundations and take Hanover into its next chapter.
The opportunity
This is a high-profile, influential role at a pivotal time for Hanover and the sector.
We have advanced our current five-year strategy, embedded robust project management, and kept our Happy Customer Strategy at the centre of the organisation: raising service standards, building more inclusive communities, and reducing isolation through social activity across our developments. We hold Investors in People Gold and Investors in People Gold for Wellbeing, and we continue to invest in people, professional development and the systems that make high-quality service possible.
Working closely with the Board and an experienced Executive Leadership Team, you will lead the delivery of Hanover’s 2027–2032 strategy. You will set clear direction, keep the organisation financially resilient and well governed, and stay relentlessly focused on outcomes for customers.
You will also be Hanover’s public voice. The next Chief Executive will strengthen our standing as a leading national advocate on housing, care and independent later life. That means trusted relationships with the Scottish Government, regulators, commissioners, local authorities and partners across housing, health, social care and the third sector. Having the confidence to contribute to national debate and shape the policies and partnerships that will define services for older people.
Innovation and measured growth sit at the heart of the brief. Homes and services must remain attractive and relevant to today’s customers and to the next generation of older people. That includes evolving our housing, technology and wider offer so people can be supported earlier in later life and remain independent for longer.
Having concentrated on strengthening the organisation and investing in existing homes, we are now beginning new projects and fcoused on developing new and existing homesin a sustainable way. That will demand judgement: the ability to balance ambition, affordability, investment, quality and risk.
You will also lead Hanover as an employer, building on our people achievements and driving continuous improvement through meaningful engagement so employees feel valued and can do their best work for customers.
About you
You are an accomplished senior leader with the strategic insight, personal credibility and energy to lead a complex, geographically dispersed and highly regulated organisation.
You may already be a Chief Executive, or an experienced Executive Director ready for the next step. Your career may have been built in housing, health, social care, local government, the third sector or another complex, regulated setting. An understanding of Hanover’s operating context will matter; where you gained it is less important than what you can do with it.
You will bring:
- A strong record of senior leadership in a complex, regulated, customer-focused organisation
- The ability to lead strategy, transformation and continuous improvement
- Political awareness and the credibility to influence government, regulators, commissioners and senior partners
- Commercial and financial acumen, including sustainable growth and commissioned services
- An appreciation of digital innovation and technology-enabled care
- A collaborative, empowering style with an experienced executive team
- Visible, engaging leadership that connects with customers and employees across Scotland
- A genuine commitment to improving the lives, choices and independence of older people
Above all, you will share Hanover’s values and bring the ambition, integrity and humanity this social purpose demands. More important than any single sector pedigree is the ability to lead at scale, navigate complexity, and turn strategy into lasting results.
