About

At Lar, we make affording a home a reality for hundreds of low-income households in communities across Scotland.  Lar is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SC044825) regulated by the Office of the Scottish Charities Regulator (“OSCR”), established to provide affordable, below-market rental accommodation to households that are unable to access social housing but are likely to suffer financial hardship due to a high proportion of household income being spent on private market rents. Our key aim is to provide high-quality, well-maintained homes at reasonable rent levels to households on moderate incomes, in locations that are well-connected.

Lar became operational in October 2015, and over the first ten years, Lar has benefited from a low-cost loan from the Scottish Government, which Lar has more than matched with commercial finance. This has enabled the completion of 800 affordable homes, all additional to grant-funded programmes and almost all additional to affordable housing contributions by developers, including several complex regeneration projects.

Because of its innovative model and finance structure, in 2025 alone, Lar has been able to save almost £3M for its tenants – that is £3,616 saved in rent per annum for each household against the prevailing market rent. During our first 10 years, Lar has helped more than 1,600 households, 26% of whom are employed in health care, 13% in construction, and 11% in hospitality. The average household income of Lar tenants is between £29k and £37k, meaning that for Lar’s beneficiaries, the average rent saving represents an incredible 10% – 13% of their household income, hard-earned money that is now available for other living costs.

Today, Lar employs 36 talented and enthusiastic professionals, all dedicated to delivering excellence in customer service, outstanding performance and a lasting impact. Over the past ten years, Lar has grown into a group of companies having in-house capacity from site acquisition, planning and design, construction to letting, tenancy and estate management, including an active community engagement programme. Our rental offering has recently extended to affordable homes from home for students, and as a group, we also own and manage a small but growing portfolio of commercial and retail units, as well as provide our services commercially to third parties.
