Scotland’s canals are steeped in history, initially acting as a catalyst for the Industrial Revolution our inland waterway network has contributed to the country’s economy for over 200 years.

Over the last decade, a new vision for Scottish Canals has driven the nation’s 250-year-old inland waterways into a renaissance, reimaging these former industrial transport arteries as corridors of opportunity, tourism, and transformation to greatly benefit the people and economy of Scotland.

In the role of Director of People and Strategy, you will provide strategic leadership across a complex, public-facing organisation, driving transformation and cultural change.

You’ll shape corporate strategy, oversee key functions including People, Health & Safety, Sustainability, Heritage, and Communications and Marketing and influence at the highest level to deliver meaningful outcomes. With exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, and a values-driven, collaborative approach, you will inspire diverse teams and ensure robust governance while championing innovation and improvement.

This is an exciting time to join Scottish Canals as the Director of People and Strategy who will play an instrumental role in helping to shape and guide the future growth and development of the organisation.

An essential heritage resource for Scotland, we manage every element of our 141 miles of canal and their environment, this includes over 4,100 major engineering structures, 560 moorings, 19 reservoirs and Europe’s first Smart Canal which is pioneering in flood management, water drainage and supply.
