Positioning Yourself for the Boardroom: Building a Strategic NED Profile
For many senior leaders, a move into a Non-Executive Director role represents more than a career transition. It’s often an opportunity to apply experience in a different way – bringing strategic insight, governance expertise, and perspective to support the long-term direction of an organisation.
At Aspen People, we were pleased to host a recent webinar in partnership with Hanover Talent Solutions, exploring how aspiring and established Non-Executive Directors can position themselves more effectively for board opportunities. The session covered everything from the realities of board recruitment, how NED appointments differ from executive, and the practical steps leaders can take to strengthen their board profiles.
The webinar was led by Victoria McLean, CEO of Hanover Talent Solutions and an experienced Board CV Writer and Executive Coach. Drawing on her work supporting senior professionals, Victoria shared practical insight on how to develop a clear, authentic, and credible NED proposition.
One of the strongest themes throughout the session was the importance of being proactive.
With an estimated 70% of appointments made through networks and existing relationships, visibility and positioning are becoming increasingly important. This creates a very different dynamic from traditional executive recruitment. A successful transition into the boardroom rarely happens by chance – it requires clarity around where your experience adds value, an understanding of the type of contribution you want to make, and a thoughtful approach to building credibility over time.
The session also explored some of the most common challenges that can prevent individuals from gaining traction in the board space. These included misunderstanding the realities of the NED role itself, not fully appreciating what boards expect from their Non-Executive Directors, lacking a clearly defined value proposition, and struggling to articulate a compelling “why” behind pursuing board opportunities. Your experience, motivations, and purpose all need to come across in a way that feels both professional and personal – whether on paper, online, or in conversation. Boards are not simply assessing technical capability; they are also considering perspective, judgement, and alignment around values and culture.
From a dedicated NED CV to a considered LinkedIn presence, use of keywords, and supporting marketing collateral, every element contributes to how your professional profile is perceived, and with a growing emphasis on digital platforms, building your personal brand in this space has never been more relevant!
Perhaps one of the clearest takeaways from the session was that building a NED career is rarely about waiting for the right opportunity to appear. It’s about positioning yourself intentionally, building meaningful relationships, and developing a profile that reflects both your experience and the value you can bring.
Thank you to everyone who joined us, asked thoughtful questions, and contributed to the discussion.
