The Region
In the last decade NewcastleGateshead has transformed itself into one of Europe's most exciting cultural destinations with something for everyone - voted one of Time Magazine's Secret Capitals of Europe.
North East England is a richly varied region, with a stunning coastline (much of which is unspoilt) and vast stretches of countryside, including the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, named by David Bellamy as 'England's last wilderness'.
Eight miles out of the city centre, Newcastle International Airport flies direct to nearly 100 destinations, including the recent introduction of the Emirates long-haul route, which brings access to 85 worldwide destinations via Dubai. Any countries that you can’t access from here will be served by nearby Durham Tees Valley airport. By train, the city is approximately 1.5 hours from Edinburgh or Leeds, 3 hours from London Kings Cross and 3 hours 20 from Birmingham New Street. From the North Shields Ferry Terminal you can sail to Holland, Norway and Scandinavia.
