Historic Environment Scotland (HES) are the lead public body that protect and conserve Scotland’s historic environment. They are dedicated to advancing heritage, culture, education as well as researching and understanding Scotland’s historic environment and addressing the impact of climate change for the future. As one of Scotland’s most rugged and beautiful landscapes, the Grampian district is deeply rooted in Scotland’s history. HES operate a number of staffed, unstaffed and partnership sites across the Grampian region and these include Elgin Cathedral, Duff House, and Huntly Castle.

The District Visitor and Community Manager is fantastic opportunity to lead a team across this district and to develop and maintain the success of the Grampian visitor and community services. With a jurisdiction over some of HES’s most prevalent and historically important sites, the successful postholder will run the operation to grow community engagement and drive commercial income opportunities. They will oversee a number of Monument and Roving Managers across the district with the role including the development of community events and engagement activities. The post requires an individual who capable of managing multiple stakeholders – be that commercial or within the public sector. This role includes working with partners across HES to sustainably increase income across ticketing, retail, events, and our catering operations.

The Grampian district is a large and diverse area and has significant potential to develop further with a strong leader in post who can effectively communicate internally and externally. There is also opportunity for the postholder to strengthen and develop their own skills. Alongside the DVCMs from other districts in the North region, they will be planning and delivering for exceptional visitor experiences, enriching local communities, and running a successful commercial operation at our properties across Grampian.

Who is the ideal postholder?

We’re looking for individuals with a passion for Scotland’s historic landscape and a passion for heritage management. As this role covers multiple sites, we’re looking for a strong people person with stakeholder management skills; with tact and diplomacy to navigate stakeholders. If possible, you will have experience across single-site or multi-site heritage, cultural or tourism destinations. You’ll be a strong operational professional with a commercial flare, who is adept at meeting plans and delivering against targets and budgets.

Please note that this role will involve regular travel to sites across the Grampian district, many of which are not accessible by public transport.
