Financial Accountant

Aspen People are delighted to be working with The Law Society Scotland to appoint a Financial Accountant based in their Edinburgh office.

The Financial Accountant will assume responsibility for the following:

  • Overseeing all aspects of financial reporting, financial controls, finance processes, and business partnering responsibilities.
  • Taking ownership of the monthly accounting process, ensuring timely completion in accordance with the agreed timetable.
  • Managing ongoing forecasting, annual budgeting, and business planning processes to the highest standard.
  • Providing detailed monthly reports to Budget Holders, Senior Leadership Team, Finance Subcommittee, Board, and Council, including thorough variance analysis for actuals against budget and forecast.
  • Monitoring and, when necessary, proposing enhancements to the finance control framework to ensure accuracy and robustness of financial information.
  • Collaborating with and supporting the Head of Finance and Executive Director of Finance and Operations, while also understanding and providing challenge to financial aspects.
  • Establishing strong, supportive relationships with Budget Holders, embedding the business partnering function through monthly financial reviews, and offering support and challenge for budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
  • Preparing monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Contributing to cash management and forecasting.
  • Providing essential financial support for internal and external audits, ensuring continuous compliance.
  • Assisting in reviewing, improving, and advancing processes and reporting, closely working with Budget Holders and the Head of Finance Transformation to implement improvements and documenting as necessary.
  • Playing a crucial role in driving efficiencies and best value for members.
  • Enhancing project reporting.
  • Supporting the year-end accounting process and reporting.
  • Assisting in quarterly VAT and annual corporation tax preparation.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a qualified accountant and will possess the following qualifications and attributes:

  • A qualified accountant with a minimum of 3 years of post-qualification experience in roles such as Management Accountant, Finance Manager, Finance Analyst, or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience in business partnering.
  • Proven track record of implementing and maintaining effective financial controls.
  • Experience in the successful management of month-end processes.
  • Ability to comprehend and present data effectively to convey clear and concise financial messages.
  • A passion for advocating high performance, challenging the status quo, actively seeking improvement and efficiencies.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • The capability to articulate complex financial data to individuals without a finance background.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a creative mindset.
  • Confidence to justify and implement changes.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Previous experience with financial system change or implementation.
