Historic Environment Scotland (HES) is Scotland’s national heritage agency, a charity dedicated to protecting Scotland’s places and sustaining the historic environment and its benefits for future generations. We are at the forefront of researching and understanding the historic environment and addressing the impact of climate change on its future. We investigate and record architectural and archaeological sites and landscapes across Scotland, look after internationally significant collections and archives and protect Scotland’s places and promote sustainable development through designation, consents and our role as part of the planning system.

The Historic Environment Scotland commercial trading activities make a significant contribution to the organisation and to the experience of visitors. The aim is to grow this significantly over the coming years and we are looking for an ambitious and enterprising person to lead this work.

This is a new senior post with responsibility for driving forward a range of income generating activities across the organisation. These currently include retail, catering, venue hire, publishing, hospitality, holiday cottages, image sales and filming.

You will develop these current activities further. Importantly, you will also explore and develop new and innovative opportunities that will increase income and profit while being consistent with the core purpose of the organisation.

This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real impact at an exciting time for the organisation and help deliver the new corporate plan for the next 3 years and beyond.

The commercial activities are delivered through Historic Environment Scotland Enterprises Limited (HESe), a wholly owned subsidiary of Historic Environment Scotland. The post holder will act as the de facto Managing Director of HESe.
