Scottish Canals are fundamental in delivering inclusive growth and economic success across Scotland’s canal network. As a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPO), they conserve canals as part of our heritage and transform them to play a vital role in Scotland today.

Scotland’s canals have a proud and rich history, having contributed to the country’s economy for over 200 years. From the industrial revolution to the present, the canals drive transformational change. Today, through investment in regeneration and tourism, they help to tackle global issues such as health inequality and climate change and we use these working heritage assets for 21st century purposes; reimagining the ways we value, protect, and enjoy our canal corridors.

Scottish Canal’s are looking to appoint a Head of Health and Safety. They will work to continually develop and improve the management of health and safety procedures by providing leadership and direction to colleagues across the business. They will also use their knowledge of safety disciplines so that all staff can discharge their health and safety responsibilities correctly. As Head of Health and Safety, they will also lead on the implementation and creation of the organisation’s strategic plans for the Health and Safety Action Plan. Overall, they will be the central point of contact for the health and safety strategy for Scottish Canals to ensure they are kept moving and improving constantly.

We are looking for an individual with a relevant Health and Safety qualification and is a member of a relevant professional body such as IOSH. They will have experience working in a large multi-disciplinary environment and have a strong understanding of safety management, risk assessments and audit processes. Additionally, they will have knowledge of compliance standards i.e., asbestos and water hygiene. As a member of the senior management team, they will have proven track record of leadership skills, report writing and strategic thinking.
