Head of People and Development

Edinburgh University Students’ Association is looking to recruit for the Head of People & Development to join our People & Development team.


We’re looking for a motivated HR professional with enthusiasm, energy and proven ability to work with and lead the colleagues across the organisation to build a positive culture together. You will be leading our People and Development team, with a variety of interesting and diverse portfolio of activities. We are a charitable organisation, with a staff team of around 100  full time and up to 250 part time staff, supporting over 45,000 members. We provide services and facilities including everything from a helpful advice centre, lively bars and exciting nightclub activity, to the hugely famous and worldwide known Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

We are an organisation, ran for and by students, with a strategic commitment to delivering outstanding support and empowerment for all of our staff, and have some exciting plans for the future. In addition to ensuring consistent and high quality people management and development across the organisation, you will lead the implementation of two transformation projects on Pay and Reward, and Values and Behaviours.

Our organisation has a wide range of functions from membership services to bars and cafes, and operates as Festival Venues during the widely famous Edinburgh Fringe. The role is a diverse one that will have oversight of a very diverse workforce of c. 100 salaried staff and c. 250 hourly paid staff, for whom we want to deliver the best working experience. The new post holder will also have responsibility for line managing two Executive Assistants, who together provide a combination of individual PA, project support, and governance administration.

We are currently  implementing phase of two major staff-facing strategic change projects – a Pay and Reward Review, and Values and Behaviours project, which will drive further development of performance management, reward and recognition, induction and development practices, and capacity-building across our management team. The postholder will be responsible for managing the delivery of these key project outcomes.

The Head of People and Development will lead the provision of the HR function ensuring consistent, high-quality people management and development across the organisation. The role will take overall responsibility for the day to day People and Development operations for a varied staff cohort and will lead on the delivery of key strategic change projects to actively promote a positive culture and build staff engagement.

The post holder will have the strong ability to drive effective people management and development practices across the organisation. The new Head of People and Development will provide managers with the framework, tools and support to enable their people to be at their best. We are looking for an enthusiastic, positive and extremely competent HR professional with demonstrable experience of delivering projects and building a positive culture. A person with very high expectations and a natural gift for empowering others and enabling staff and volunteers to be at their best.

Salary:  up to £50k per annum, plus a generous benefits package:

Hours: 37.5 hours per week (flexible working and hybrid considered)
