We are now looking to recruit Lay Members of the University Council. As a member of our Council, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of this esteemed institution. Lay Members are indispensable contributors to Cardiff University, collaborating with fellow Council members and the Executive team to establish the institution’s mission, strategic direction, overall goals, and values. Our Lay Members hail from diverse backgrounds, reflecting the university’s commitment to providing education and services that empower thousands of students and support the growth of our dedicated staff.
Successful candidates will possess the skills and competence to fulfill the following essential functions as a Lay Member of Council:
- Provide critical scrutiny of strategy, financial plans, risk management, and performance oversight.
- Uphold the quality of our educational provision.
- Contribute to institutional success and long-term objectives.
- Foster an inclusive and welcoming board culture.
- Demonstrate an interest in Wales and its unique context, which influences our decision-making.
The University is particularly interested in candidates with experience in:
- Academic / Education, preferably in higher education
- Finance, including investment management, banking, or pensions
- People or Human Resources
- Legal / Governance
- Digital Infrastructure and Information Technology
- Significant experience in large and complex organizations or an impressive track record of personal achievements
- Leadership experience
- Familiarity with the role of a Non-Executive or Trustee in the private, public, or voluntary sector
- An understanding of the context of UK higher education and research

Terms of Office and Time Commitment
The term of office is four years, with an estimated time commitment of 16 to 18 days per year, depending on additional roles and responsibilities. This includes:
- Four days for Council meetings
- Four days/half days for training/away days
- Five days for membership of major committee(s) of Council
- Preparation time for meetings
- Attendance at various University events, such as awards ceremonies, Graduation, and Varsity
- Council Meetings are typically held in Cardiff, offered in a hybrid format (face-to-face and virtual), while major committees usually meet virtually
This position is non-remunerated, but reasonable travel expenses will be covered, and IT equipment will be provided if necessary.
